The concept starts with a conversation between Jesus and a religious leader named Nicodemus. Jesus makes it clear that religious knowledge isn't enough; a spiritual overhaul is required.

"Jesus replied, 'Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.'"— John 3:3
Later in that same conversation, he explains that this isn't a physical process, but a spiritual one:
"Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit." — John 3:6

The Bible emphasizes that this rebirth isn't something you can earn by being "good enough." It is a gift triggered by faith and grace.
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."— Ephesians 2:8–9

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."— Ephesians 2:8–9
It also involves a verbal and internal commitment to Jesus as the leader of your life:
"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."— Romans 10:9

The Bible describes being born again as a complete identity shift. You aren't just a "better version" of your old self; you are someone entirely new in God's eyes.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" — 2 Corinthians 5:17
This means your past mistakes (sins) are not just covered up—they are removed, and you start with a clean slate.

Once you are born again, your relationship with God changes from "Stranger" or "Judge" to "Father." You are legally and spiritually adopted into His family. "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent... but born of God." — John 1:12–13

The Journey of Rebirth

The Journey of Rebirth
The story begins with the honest realisation that we have all drifted away from our Creator. As Romans 3:23 explains, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." This "falling short" creates a gap that we cannot bridge by our own strength or good deeds. In fact, the natural result of staying on that path is spiritual disconnection, because "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23a).
However, the passage doesn't end there. The second half of that verse reveals the turning point: "...but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23b). This gift is what makes the second birth possible. It is an act of grace, meaning it is freely given rather than earned. As Ephesians 2:8 reminds us, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."
To receive this gift and be "born again," one must simply respond to the one knocking. In Revelation 3:20, Jesus says, "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in." Opening that door involves a shift in both the heart and the mind. Romans 10:9 describes this beautifully: "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
The moment you step through that door, the Bible says your identity is permanently altered. You are no longer defined by your past or your mistakes. Instead, you are adopted into a new family. As John 1:12 declares, "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." You are now a "new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17), starting a brand new life with a clean slate and a direct connection to your Heavenly Father.

This is often called the Sinner’s Prayer or the Prayer of Salvation.
It is a verbal way of "opening the door" as described in Revelation 3:20.

A Simple Prayer of Salvation
If you feel ready to start this new life, you can pray something like this:
"Lord Jesus, I admit that I have lived my life my own way and have sinned against You. I believe that You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins, and that You rose again to give me life.
Today, I choose to turn away from my past and follow You. I open the door of my heart and ask You to come in. Be my Savior and the Leader of my life. Thank You for Your grace, Your forgiveness, and for making me a new creation. Amen."
What the Bible Says About This Moment
When you pray a prayer like this with sincere faith, the Bible confirms several immediate truths about your new status:
• You are forgiven: "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace." (Ephesians 1:7)
• You are a child of God: "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" (1 John 3:1)
• You have eternal life: "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life." (1 John 5:13)
• Heaven celebrates: "I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." (Luke 15:10)
